The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, education and services at local, national and international levels. 950 people from 95 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.



The Swiss Centre for International Health (SCIH) provides consultancy, project design and ideation, as well as project and grant management services. With multi-disciplinary teams in Switzerland and around the world, SCIH offers a broad range of expertise, including strategic consulting, project implementation, policy advice, implementation research and more.



PhD Position in Health Systems Research (100%)


Your various responsibilities include:

  • Plan and implement a doctoral research project as well as the analysis, interpretation and publishing of research results
  • Investigate the process and outcome of digital health technology interventions for the control of NCDs in two countries of West Africa
  • Embed research activities within a HORIZON project built up by African and European partners

You should have the following experience and skills:

  • Master degree level in epidemiology, public health, psychology or health service management, medicine or a similar field
  • Knowledge on quantitative and qualitative research methods and/or knowledge translation approaches as well as control of NCDs and digital health interventions
  • Fluency in written and spoken in French and English. French language skills are a must
  • Able to work independently as well as in a team and pro-active, goal-oriented and collaborative work attitude
  • Willingness to travel to West Africa and to stay on-site for data collection
  • Besides an interest in applied implementation research, ideally the candidate has experience and a publication track-record on issues pertaining to digital health technology, NCD control and/or health systems strengthening

  • Travel required: Yes, with prolonged stay(s) in West-Africa
